Soursop or Graviola, as it is also known; is rich in Vitamin B1 & B2, as well as Vitamin C, a water-soluble antioxidant, and has a long, well documented history of medicinal use throughout many Asian, South American and African countries. Various parts of the tree, including the bark, leaves, roots, fruit and seeds; have been used for centuries by native medicine men to treat inflammation, pain, fever, heart disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis. There have been reports of Soursop aiding in lowering blood sugar levels and blood pressure.
Soursop tea can also have a calming effect and can be very helpful for restless sleepers. Soursop has a high flavonoid content. Flavonoids are phytochemicals that have been found to prevent the growth of viruses, carcinogens and allergens. Pharmaceutical research has found anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-malarial, and especially cytostatic capabilities of some chemical constituents of the leaves and bark. Acetoginins (found in soursop) are thought to have anti-HIV and anti-cancer effects.
